Couples therapy in Ottawa
Longer sessions for couples who keep having the same argument, who are rebuilding trust or who need to make a decision together.
Overview
Couples therapy gives both partners a structured place to talk when conversations at home keep going in circles. The first session is with both of you, and your therapist may then meet each of you once on your own. Our couples therapists have completed training in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and the Gottman Method. You decide together what you want to work on, whether that is conflict, trust after an affair or a decision about the future of the relationship.
- 75-minute sessions
- One individual session for each partner if needed
- In person or by video
- Married, common-law and dating couples
- Separate receipts for each partner on request

Your first session
You do not need to prepare anything. Here is what usually happens in the first hour.
Both of you, together
The first session is with both partners. Idris asks each of you what brought you in and what you hope will change.
One session each, if needed
Idris may then meet each of you once on your own. This gives each partner time to talk about their history and what feels hard to say in the room.
Back together
You meet as a couple from then on, usually every week or two. Each session ends with something small to try at home.

Clients often come to us with

Questions about couples therapy
Ask anything else on your first call. It is free and takes about 15 minutes.
What if my partner does not want to come?
You can start in individual therapy on your own. Many partners join later, once they know what sessions are like.
Can we get separate receipts?
Yes. Ask us and we split each receipt between both partners, so each of you can claim your share on your own health plan.
Is therapy covered by my health plan?
Many extended health plans cover sessions with a Registered Psychotherapist. Check your plan's yearly maximum and whether it covers psychotherapy before your first session.
What should I do if I am in crisis?
We cannot offer crisis support between sessions. Call or text 9-8-8 at any time. In Ottawa, you can also call the Distress Centre at 613-238-3311. If you are in danger, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.
