The brief

The owners loved their brick house but not the narrow kitchen at the back. It had one small window, no room for two cooks and a door to the garden that nobody used.

What we did

  1. We removed a wall between the kitchen and an old pantry to make one long room. A new beam carries the load, hidden inside the ceiling.
  2. The window was widened to match the originals at the front of the house. A glass door now opens straight onto the garden.
  3. Tall green cabinets hold the fridge, the pantry and a coffee station. The island is white oak with a honed limestone top.

The result

The kitchen now gets light from two sides all day. The family eats at the island most nights and uses the garden door every day.

Scope of work

  • Wall removal and new beam
  • Custom white oak and painted cabinets
  • Limestone counters
  • Widened window and new garden door
  • Oak floors throughout
