What counts as an emergency

Canadian Dental Care Plan

Our general dentists see patients covered by the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP). The plan is run by the Government of Canada. We bill Sun Life directly for covered services, so you do not pay the full cost up front.

  • Direct billing to Sun Life
  • Written estimate before treatment
  • Healthy Smiles Ontario accepted

Who qualifies

Four conditions, set by the Government of Canada

This summary comes from the CDCP pages on canada.ca, checked in September 2026. The plan can change, so check canada.ca before you apply.

  1. You do not have access to dental insurance, including a health spending account that covers dental care.

  2. Your adjusted family net income is less than $90,000.

  3. You, and your spouse or common-law partner if you have one, filed a tax return in Canada for last year.

  4. You are a resident of Canada for tax purposes.

Check in three questions

Nothing is sent. Only the Government of Canada can confirm if you qualify.

Do you have dental insurance through work, a pension or a health spending account?
Did you file a tax return for last year? Include your spouse or partner if you have one.

Answer the three questions to see what may apply to you.

The plan is for people without dental insurance

The CDCP does not cover people who have access to a dental plan, including a health spending account. We bill most private plans directly, so bring your plan details to your visit.

File your tax return first

The plan uses your tax return to check your family income. Once your return is filed, you can apply on canada.ca.

Over the income limit

The plan is for families with an adjusted net income under $90,000. We still give you a written estimate before treatment, and bill most private plans directly.

You may qualify, with no co-payment

At this income, the plan pays its set fee for covered services in full. If our fee is higher than the plan's fee, you also pay the difference. We show it on your written estimate.

You may qualify, with a 40% co-payment

At this income, the plan pays 60% of its set fee for covered services and you pay the other 40%. If our fee is higher than the plan's fee, you also pay the difference. We show it on your written estimate.

You may qualify, with a 60% co-payment

At this income, the plan pays 40% of its set fee for covered services and you pay the other 60%. If our fee is higher than the plan's fee, you also pay the difference. We show it on your written estimate.

What may cost extra

What the plan pays, and what you might

The fee difference

The CDCP sets its own fee for each service. If our fee is higher, you pay the difference, on top of any co-payment. Your written estimate shows the amount before treatment.

Approval before some treatment

Some services, including crowns, partial dentures and a second root canal on the same tooth, need approval from the plan before we start. We send the request and book once it comes back.

Questions about your own coverage? Call (613) 555-0184. For eligibility, only the Government of Canada can answer.

Who runs the Canadian Dental Care Plan?

The Government of Canada runs the plan and decides who qualifies. Sun Life processes the claims that dental offices send.

Do I pay anything at the visit?

You pay your co-payment if you have one, plus any difference between our fee and the CDCP fee. We show both on your written estimate before treatment.

Does the plan need to approve some treatment first?

Yes. Some services, such as crowns and a second root canal on the same tooth, need approval from the plan before we start. We send the request for you.

My child has Healthy Smiles Ontario. Can we still come?

Yes. We accept Healthy Smiles Ontario for children and youth 17 and under. Ontario runs that program and decides who qualifies.
