What is included

Children's dentistry, with our general dentists

Children's dentistry at Maplegate is provided by our general dentists. We see children from their first birthday, and a parent can stay in the room for the whole visit. Early visits are short and focus on getting used to the chair, the lights and the tools. When a child needs care that we do not provide, we refer your family to another dental office and send your child's records.

  1. First visits from age one
  2. Sealants and fluoride
  3. Parents welcome in the room
  4. Healthy Smiles Ontario accepted
  5. Referral and records sent when your child needs care we do not provide

Who does what

The people in the room

  • General dentist

Examines your child, applies sealants and explains what they see to you and your child.

  • Registered dental hygienist

Cleans and polishes, applies fluoride and shows your child how to brush.

The visit

A first visit, from age one

  1. 5 minStep 1

    A ride in the chair

Your child can sit on your lap. We tip the chair back slowly and let them press the button.

  2. 10 minStep 2

    Count the teeth

The dentist counts teeth out loud with the tiny mirror and looks at how they are coming in.

  3. 10 minStep 3

    Brush and fluoride

A quick polish and fluoride varnish if your child is ready. We stop when they want to stop.

  4. 5 minStep 4

    Tips for you

We talk about brushing, bottles, snacks and thumb sucking, and book the next visit.

Meet the room

Meet the room with your child

Read these together before the first visit. They are the words we use in the chair.

  1. The big chair

It tips back slowly so you can lie down. Ask us to stop it any time.

  2. Sunglasses

The light is bright. These keep it out of your eyes, and you can keep them on.

  3. Headphones

Bring your own music or a show. You can borrow ours too.

  4. The tiny mirror

A little mirror on a stick. It helps us see the backs of your teeth.

  5. The slurpy straw

It drinks up water all by itself and makes a funny noise.

  6. Your toothbrush

At the end we show you which teeth need a little more brushing.

  7. The paper cup

For a rinse at the end. Take as many sips as you like.

Referrals

When we refer

When a child needs care that we do not provide, such as treatment under general anaesthetic, we refer your family to another dental office and send your child's records.

Costs

A written estimate before treatment

We bill most insurance plans directly and accept Healthy Smiles Ontario. Before any treatment beyond a checkup, you get a written estimate.
