The brief

A growing family wanted more space on the main floor without leaving the neighbourhood. The yard was deep enough to build out the back.

What we did

  1. We worked with an architect on a simple box clad in charred cedar and metal. It sits apart from the old brick.
  2. New footings, a steel beam and an opening through the old back wall join the addition to the house.
  3. Triple-pane windows and a large sliding door face the garden. In-floor heating keeps the new room warm in January.

The result

The family gained 420 square feet of living space and a kitchen that looks onto the garden.

Scope of work

  • Architect and engineer coordination
  • Permits and inspections
  • Foundations, framing and roofing
  • Cedar and metal cladding
  • Kitchen and family room fit-out
